​Dispelling Myths About Hiring Employees with Disabilities

Myth 2:
Employers' insurance rates will increase when employing persons with disabilities.
Fact: Employers' insurance rates will NOT increase when employing persons with disabilities.


Equal Treatment: Insurance premiums are typically based on the overall risk profile of the workforce, not on individual employees.
ADA Compliance: The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination based on disability, ensuring that insurance companies do not raise rates for businesses that hire employees with disabilities.
Employer Experience: Many employers have reported that their insurance rates remained unchanged after hiring employees with disabilities.


Myth 1: Employees with disabilities are not dependable.
Fact:
Employees with disabilities are dependable employees.


High Retention Rates: Studies show that employees with disabilities have higher retention rates, reducing the cost associated with turnover.
Commitment and Reliability: Many employers report that employees with disabilities are often more committed and reliable, contributing positively to the workplace environment.
Performance: Performance levels of employees with disabilities are comparable to those without disabilities, and they often exceed expectations in many roles.

Myth 3: Most job accommodations cost employers a lot of money.
Fact: Most job accommodations cost employers little to no money.


Low Cost: According to the Job Accommodation Network (JAN), more than half of all job accommodations cost employers nothing. The remaining accommodations typically cost around $500 or less.
Tax Incentives: Employers may be eligible for tax incentives, such as the Disabled Access Credit and the Work Opportunity Tax Credit, to offset accommodation costs.
Improved Productivity: Effective accommodations can lead to improved productivity and performance, often yielding a high return on investment for the employer.
